Home Is Where The Heart Is

Cultural meetings: Portraits of life in Africa and life of Africans in Europe

Years of fascination for African culture has been turned into a number of colourful portraits from Africa with parallel images of African diaspora in Europe. Among the themes of the pictures are the desire to remain in contact with cultural roots and to exchange and share the best of African and European values. Besides working as photographer and webdesigner, Jacob Crawfurd maintains a personal website devoted to African Culture and in specific African related events taking place in Denmark.

Celebrating Black History Month in Southall

A free family showcase of music, dance, poetry and photography will kick off Ealing Council's Black History Month (BHM) celebrations in Southall.

The Dominion Arts Education Centre will host an evening with Keith Waithe and the Macusi Players, African Drums by Heritage Ceramics and dance by Dance Carib at 6.30pm Friday 6 October.

The showcase is in conjunction with the centre's BHM exhibition 'HOME IS WHERE THE HEART IS' by Danish photographer Jacob Crawfurd.

This vibrantly colourful and insightful collection of images illustrates the parallel experiences of African life in Africa and in Europe, capturing the link between the tribal, social and cultural practices of Africans.

Despite living in Europe, those depicted in the photographs still place great value on their traditions and continue to observe their cultural beliefs and customs.

Linda Singh, centre manager, said: “I am delighted that once again the centre will be at the forefront of Black History Month celebrations in Southall. We have a proud history of supporting the rich culture of our African Caribbean community.”

Describing his exhibition, Jacob Crawfurd, said: “The multi-cultural society is already a fact. People from all over the world move around mixing culture and ideas. It has always been like that, but it is getting a little more visible now. Cultural meetings are sometimes a difficult challenge, but everybody can learn from the process.”

The ‘HOME IS WHERE THE HEART IS’ exhibition opens on 29 September and continues until 16 November.

The centre will also run art workshops for children aged 6-13 years during the October half-term, week commencing 23/10/06.
