Dancing in the streetsGambian Cultural Week in Copenhagen (Denmark) 2004So far the summer of 2004 has not been much of a summer in northern Europe. While we can’t do anything about the weather, we can rest assured that African celebrations always brings joy and high spirits to the streets. The first week of July is time for the Gambian Cultural Week in Copenhagen. “The cultural week” is an annual event arranged by The Gambian Association in Denmark with guests attending from Norway, Sweden, Germany and other neighbouring countries. The pictures here are from the opening “Tama” dance on a central square in town. Gambian drummers continued for hours while the ladies danced their wild and powerful dances. A crowd of Africans and Danes surrounded the dancers. Others enjoyed a little extra entertainment from the street cafés. Colours and rhythms put a smile on everybody’s face. The cultural week also includes children programmes, football matches, barbecues, music and of course… parties all night long!
